WESTERN MARINE COMMAND DEALS MAJOR BLOW TO CANNABIS SATIVA SMUGGLERS, SEIZES N398M WORTH OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE IN LARGEST SINGLE OPERATION
The Western Marine Command has made a significant breakthrough in its anti-smuggling efforts, seizing the largest single shipment of cannabis sativa in its history.

The seizure, which occurred on February 20, 2025, was made possible by the Command's intensified efforts and credible intelligence.
According to Comptroller PK Bamisaiye, the Customs Area Controller, the smugglers were spotted near Ilase sea beach, about 200 nautical miles from the Lagos anchorage. Despite attempting to outrun the officers, the smugglers were forced to abandon their boat and jump into the sea. The boat was secured and found to contain 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa, weighing 1,958kg and valued at N398,265,000.
This seizure is consistent with the Command's resolve to sustain its anti-smuggling drive and operations. The Western Marine Command has a history of making significant seizures, including 15 sacks of cannabis sativa worth N107,205,000 just two months ago. In January 2024, the Command intercepted and seized 51 sacks containing 4,070 parcels of cannabis sativa.

The Command has reiterated its commitment to making the waterway axis a no-safe haven for smugglers, creating a secure and thriving environment free from all illicit goods. The seized hard drugs will be handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Command will continue to partner with other sister agencies to protect the nation's borders.
Comptroller Bamisaiye appreciated the support of the CGC and his management team in providing critical resources and equipment to aid in the fight against smuggling.

He also commended the officers and men of the Command for their dedication and hard work, which led to the successful seizure.

The Western Marine Command has sent a strong warning to all unpatriotic elements involved in smuggling activities to desist from their illegal business or face the full wrath of the law. The Command is determined to continue its anti-smuggling drive and operations, ensuring that the nation's borders are well protected and the economy is safeguarded from the activities of smugglers.
As the Command continues to intensify its efforts against smuggling, it is clear that the war against illicit substances is being won. The seizure of N398m worth of cannabis sativa is a significant milestone in this fight, and the Command is committed to building on this success to ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria.
