NPA BOSS DANTSOHO TAKES BOLD STEP TO TACKLE LAGOS PORT CONGESTION, PLEDGES ZERO TOLERANCE FOR TRAFFIC CLOGS
In a move aimed at tackling the perennial congestion at the Lagos Ports, the Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, recently conducted an unscheduled visit to the Lagos Ports access road. The visit, which took place on Monday, February 17, 2025, was aimed at assessing the traffic situation and identifying areas for improvement.
During his visit, Dantsoho emphasized the importance of traffic management efficiency, stating that the NPA has "zero tolerance for traffic clogs that cause congestion." He also highlighted the need for automated access gates and shorter Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to facilitate quick transaction turnaround and remain competitive internationally.
"We are committed to ensuring that the Lagos Ports operate efficiently and effectively," Dantsoho said. "Traffic congestion is a major challenge that we must tackle head-on. We will work tirelessly to ensure that the ports are free from congestion and that cargo clearance is done in a timely and efficient manner."
To address the congestion challenge, Dantsoho announced plans to work with Nigeria Customs to relocate a scanner on the rail line link in Apapa, which will facilitate seamless evacuation. He also commended the Honourable Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for securing FEC approval for the reconstruction of TinCan Island and rehabilitation of Apapa Port Complexes.
"The reconstruction of TinCan Island and rehabilitation of Apapa Port Complexes is a major milestone in our efforts to improve the efficiency of the Lagos Ports," Dantsoho said. "We will work closely with the Ministry and other stakeholders to ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget."
Additionally, Dantsoho met with Chairman Flour Mills Group, Mr. John Coumantaros, to discuss process improvement and increased investment in infrastructure and equipment necessary for Nigerian Ports to compete globally. Coumantaros praised the investor-friendly policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Dantsoho expressed optimism about Nigeria's readiness to accommodate large cargo carriers following the Federal Government's approval of the National Single Window (NSW) project.
"The National Single Window project is a game-changer for the Nigerian economy," Dantsoho said. "It will enable us to process cargo clearance more efficiently and effectively, and will make Nigeria a more attractive destination for international trade."
The NPA boss also emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnership among stakeholders in the maritime industry. He called on terminal operators, shipping lines, and other stakeholders to work together to ensure that the Lagos Ports operate efficiently and effectively.
"We must work together to achieve our goals," Dantsoho said. "We must collaborate and partner to ensure that the Lagos Ports are a hub of economic activity and growth."
The visit by Dantsoho to the Lagos Ports access road is a clear indication of the NPA's commitment to tackling the congestion challenge and improving the efficiency of the ports. With the support of stakeholders and the Federal Government, the NPA is poised to make significant progress in achieving its goals.
