Federal Government Approves Moderate Telecom Tariff Increase Amid Industry Pressure
The Federal Government has announced its decision to approve a moderate increase in telecom tariffs, following intense pressure from telecom operators.
The decision was made public by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a stakeholders' meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja.
The telecom operators had been pushing for a 100% tariff increase, citing rising operational costs and the need to invest in infrastructure. However, the government has opted for a more moderate approach, aiming to strike a balance between protecting citizens and ensuring the sector's growth.
According to Dr. Tijani, "We want to strike the balance as a government to protect our people, but also protect and ensure that these companies can continue to invest significantly.
We need to ensure that as a sector, we get our acts together, ensure that from the regulation side, we put the right regulations in place that can ensure the growth of this sector."
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will soon approve the new tariffs and make them public. The commission is working to ensure transparency and simplicity in telecom billing.
They're introducing simplified templates to show charges per minute for voice calls, SMS, and data.
The tariff increase is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector and unlock benefits for Nigerian consumers.
However, the government acknowledges that it's a sensitive issue and wants to ensure that the increase is fair and reasonable.
Dr. Tijani emphasized that the government would no longer leave investments in infrastructure solely to private companies.
"As a country, over time, we have left these investments in the hands of the private sector. They typically invest where they can see returns in the short to medium term.
We will not want this conversation to just be about tariff increase. I think what the world is talking about today is meaningful connectivity," he said.
The telecom industry is a critical sector in Nigeria, providing employment opportunities and contributing significantly to the country's GDP.
The government's decision to approve a moderate tariff increase is expected to have a positive impact on the sector, enabling telecom operators to invest in infrastructure and improve services.
However, consumer groups and civil society organizations have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the tariff increase on consumers. They argue that the increase could lead to higher costs for consumers, particularly low-income households.
As the NCC prepares to announce the new tariffs, stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the details of the increase.
The government has assured that the increase will be fair and reasonable, but only time will tell if this promise will be kept.
