MWUN President General Warns Against Interference in Upcoming Elections
The President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has appealed to companies, individuals, stakeholders, agencies, and parastatals not to support any candidate in a way that could destabilize the peace currently enjoyed in the maritime sector.
Adeyanju made the appeal in his address at the National Executive Meeting of the union held in Lagos on Tuesday.
He noted that the union's electoral process is democratic and stands on a tradition of the delegate process, which they strictly abide by in accordance with their constitution.
The President General urged members of the union and other stakeholders to allow peace to reign as the union prepares to elect new executives in March 2025.
He emphasized the importance of non-interference from external agents outside of those recognized by the union's constitution.
Adeyanju reflected on his administration's achievements over the past eight years, noting that it has ushered in liberation and freedom, though not without challenges. He described the present moment as a time for unity, where all members of the union can come together and give themselves a pat on the back for the progress made.
The MWUN boss appreciated the enormous and unwavering support received from governments, sister unions, employers, parastatals, and agencies.
He also acknowledged the support of his executives, colleagues, and the four branch Presidents, who have contributed to the numerous success stories enjoyed during his administration.
Adeyanju equally appreciated President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, and heads of agencies in the maritime subsector for their support. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the maritime sector, especially as the union prepares for its upcoming elections.
As the union navigates towards the elections in March 2025, Adeyanju urged members to remember the sacrifices of their past heroes, who through sheer will, understanding, tolerance, and prioritizing collective good over individual gain, embraced reforms that have transformed the maritime sector.
The President General's appeal for non-interference in the union's electoral process is a clear indication of his commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the maritime sector.
As the union prepares for its upcoming elections, it is essential that all stakeholders respect the democratic process and allow the union to elect its new executives without any external influence.
