Maritime Workers Union Issues 7-Day Ultimatum to CRFFN Over Unpaid Salaries
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has reinstated a seven-day ultimatum to the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN), demanding the immediate payment of outstanding salaries to its members.
In a statement signed by Comrade Felix Akingboye, Secretary General of MWUN, the union emphasized that failure to settle the outstanding salaries within the stipulated timeframe will lead to industrial action. This may include the withdrawal of services from seaports, terminals, jetties, and oil and gas platforms.
The development comes after an earlier ultimatum was suspended, following a communique signed on September 18, 2024, between MWUN and CRFFN. However, the CRFFN has allegedly failed to honor the agreement, prompting MWUN to reinstate the ultimatum.
The union emphasized its commitment to defending the rights of its members and ensuring that their welfare is prioritized. MWUN expressed appreciation for the President's appointment of a new Registrar/CEO to head the CRFFN, but noted that the change in leadership has resulted in the stoppage of salary payments to MWUN members.
MWUN had initially commended the Honourable Minister of Marine & Blue Economy for facilitating a Bail-Out bond to assist the CRFFN in paying part of the backlog of salary arrears owed to workers. However, the union is now facing another regression in the matter, with employees of CRFFN being owed months of arrears with no clear resolution in sight.
The union urged the CRFFN management to settle the outstanding salaries within the stipulated timeframe to avoid industrial action. Failure to comply will result in the union taking action to defend the rights of its members.
In a similar development, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) had earlier given the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum to pay outstanding salaries .
