Bayelsa Prepares for Impending Floods: Government Directs Environment Ministry and Sanitation Authority to Take Action
The Bayelsa State Government has taken proactive measures to prepare for the predicted massive flooding across several states in Nigeria, as warned by the Nigerian.
Meteorological Agency (NiMeT). Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo issued the directive during the 138th State Executive Council meeting, emphasizing the need for the state and its people to be on high alert .
As the exit point where waters from River Niger and Benue River empty into the Atlantic Ocean, Bayelsa State is particularly vulnerable to flooding. The Deputy Governor stressed the importance of clearing and opening natural water canals to facilitate unrestricted water flow and prevent avoidable flooding.
Key Measures to Prevent Flooding:
Clearing of Drainages
The Environment Ministry and Sanitation Authority have been directed to ensure regular clearing of drainages.
Prevention of Indiscriminate Waste Disposal Citizens are urged to avoid dumping refuse on drainages and water channels to prevent flooding and environmental pollution.
Local Government Support_: Local government councils are encouraged to complement state government efforts to alleviate suffering in the event of devastating flooding.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo expressed satisfaction with the State Emergency Management Agency's preparedness and thanked security agencies for their efforts in keeping the state safe.
He also appreciated Bayelsans for their support and invited them to the state's annual thanksgiving service on November 2, 2024
