Fisheries Experts Call for Review of Laws to Place Sector under Blue Economy Ministry
Maritime experts have urged the government to review relevant laws and place the fisheries sector under the Ministry of Blue Economy. They made this call at the 1st Annual Conference of the Alumni Association of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT), themed "Unlocking the Potential of Blue Economy".

Mrs. Rollens Macfoy, a fisheries expert and CEO of Ocean Deep Maritime Services Ltd., stressed the need for incentives like grants, loans, and tax holidays to position fishing for economic growth. She advocated for the placement of fisheries institutions under the Blue Economy Ministry, citing the potential for youth employment and GDP growth.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, represented by Mr. Yusuf Barde, emphasized the commitment of the Blue Economy Ministry to sustainable ocean resource utilization.

Barr. Temisan Omatseye, former NIMASA Director General, also supported the call for the fisheries sector to be moved to the Blue Economy Ministry.

The Deputy Provost of FCFMT, Adewole Aderonke, highlighted the need for better collaboration with industry players and operators. Capt. William Ogunsakin, President of the Alumni Association, emphasized the critical role of the blue economy in Nigeria's economic growth, food security, and environmental sustainability.
The conference brought together maritime experts, including Capt. Adewale Ishola, Capt. Olopoeniyan, Barr. Gloria Kanabe, and Mrs. Tosan Edodo-Emore, as well as students of Fisheries and Oceanography, to explore ways to unlock the potential of the blue economy.
