Empowering Women, Enhancing Families: POWA President Launches Maiden Empowerment Scheme for Wives of Police Officers
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency among wives of police officers, the President of the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA), Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun, has launched a maiden empowerment scheme for members of the association in the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command.
The scheme, which was flagged off at a ceremony held at the Command's headquarters in Apapa, Lagos, is a testament to the POWA President's commitment to empowering women and enhancing families.
Through the POWA Chairperson of the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, Mrs. Abiola Ishola, wives of police officers attached to the Command were empowered with various equipment and gadgets to aid their entrepreneurial pursuits.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun, who was represented by the Zone 2 Police Command POWA chairperson, Mrs. Gloria Durosimi; the Lagos State Police Command POWA chairperson, Mrs. Adekemi Fayoade; POWA members; the chief host, Mrs. Abiola Ishola; the Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, CP Olanrewaju Olawale Ishola; and his management team.
In her welcome address, the chief host, Mrs. Abiola Ishola, highlighted the importance of empowering wives of police officers, noting that it was no longer fashionable for them to sit at home without having a skill that would help them earn a living.
She emphasized that the empowerment scheme was conceived to equip them with entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to support their families and contribute to the economy.
CP Ishola appreciated the wives of police officers for their unwavering support to their husbands, noting that such support was crucial in encouraging police officers to discharge their duties legitimately. He also thanked the wife of the Inspector-General of Police for conceiving and executing the idea of empowering wives of police officers.
The program featured cultural displays from various ethnic groups, a short talk on the effects of drug abuse anchored by Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, Bola Ojeleye, from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the distribution of equipment such as grinding machines, hair dryers, sewing machines, and deep freezers to POWA members.
The Lagos State Police Command POWA Chairperson, Mrs. Adekemi Fayoade, commended the empowerment scheme in a vote of thanks, noting that it would go a long way in promoting entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency among wives of police officers.
The empowerment scheme aligns with the vision of the POWA President to ensure that all police officers' wives develop entrepreneurial skills that will be useful to them and their immediate families.
The scheme is expected to be replicated in other police commands across the country, empowering more women and enhancing families.
