Barr. Hassan Bello, the recently-retired Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC), has received the esteemed National Honours Awards of the Order of the Niger (OON).

On June 1, 2023, Bello, who had been nominated for the recognition by the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, received it in Abuja.

Bello received the award in honor of the eight years he spent as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers' Council, during which time he made contributions to the maritime industry.

The elated Barr.Bello had this to say, “My profound gratitude goes to former President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. I am humbled that I have been conferred with the prestigious National Award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).”

“This honour at this point in the history of our nation, fills my heart with sincere
gratitude to the president, the nation, the transport Ministry as well as the maritime
sector where I was given the opportunity to serve as executive secretary of the NSC
for eight years.

The widespread praise for Mr. Hassan Bello's inclusive and cooperative regulatory approach to fostering harmony among stakeholders is well-deserved according to his well wishers.

The former Director of Commercial Shipping for the Council, Mrs. Shall-Holma, was also given the same OON for her contributions to the growth of the country's transportation industry.

With a total area of 1,719.8 km2 and a total distance of 593.9 km from Jamata to the Atlantic Ocean, the lower River Niger navigational charts were created under the leadership of Mrs. Shall-Holma.
