Ikorodu Lighter Terminal, Dead on Arrival - Dr Ayobami Omotoso

Ikorodu Lighter Terminal, Dead on Arrival - Dr Ayobami Omotoso

According to Dr. Ayobami Omotoso, President of the Chartered Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria (CIECOBON), the use of the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal, once designated for export, was a decision that was doomed from the start due to the lack of flat-bottomed vessels to transport cargo to Apapa.

Speaking at a recent courtesy call on Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer and Management of Nigerian Shipper's Council, NSC, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime at the NSC headquarters in Lagos, Dr. Omotoso was joined by other Institute members.

The President/Council Chairman requested NSC's assistance during the tour in order to promote export.

In order to further promote exports, he also urged NSC to lobby the Federal Government to create an export-specific Port.

Dr. Omotoso said that one of the sub-regional shipping lines has been offering open roof-top vessels to Ghanaian exporters of agricultural products. The RIFA containers that should typically be used are too expensive for many exporters, thus he begged NSC to consider the prospect of providing such a service to Nigerian exporters.

The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Emmanuel Jime, responded by extending a warm welcome to the delegation and assuring them that a partnership that will help the country's economy will result from the NSC's mandate being aligned with that of CIECOBON. He praised CIECOBON's tenacity in promoting exports.

He also confirmed that the NSC would talk about the proposal for open rooftop vessels on behalf of Dr. Omotoso and his group.
Following National Assembly approval of the merger of the Institute of Export of Nigeria (IEON) and Commodity Brokers Association of Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria (CIECOBON) was established in 2015. (CBAN).
